Birdseye trestle table
These clients wanted a very uniquely shaped dining table to fit into their Victorian home. The long, narrow shape of their dining room suggested a trestle type table would be an appropriate style. A further request was that it be reasonably compact, yet extend to accommodate a many as fourteen guests! I made a mock up to work out the technical details of this piece which is 36" in width by eight feet long closed, and extends to a full twelve feet in length.
It is made from birdeye maple, one of our more beautiful woods. The trestles are made of wenge, overlaid with sawn birdseye maple veneer. The stretcher is tenoned through each trestle, and the wenge wedges hold this joint tight. It can be readily dissassembled for moving. I used an aniline dye to achieve the desired colour, which enhances the figure of the maple without obscuring it. |
