Walnut bed

Another commissioned piece where I was given considerable latitude with respect to design.

I had for some time been wanting to build a piece with an arched foot on an outward leaning leg.  This resulted in the tall headboard leg;  it was then necessary to scale the leg down for the footboard, while still retaining the same style.  This was challenging, being constrained by mattress thickness' and the like, but I feel I rose to the challenge.

The mattress sits directly on slats, rather than a boxspring, and the footboard's crest rail is slightly below the height of the mattress.  I feel this allows the piece to exhibit the aesthetic aspects of a footboard, without becoming overly heavy.

Walnut bed with spalted maple

I put an unusually large amount of effort into sourcing wood for this piece.  I had to look far and wide to find thick, clear pieces of walnut for the rails and legs.  The panels are from some flitch-cut walnut I bought green and dried, allowing me to balance the grain in a harmonious manner.  The centre panels are book-matched spalted maple;  the pictures don't do them justice.
